Sažetak
The paper describes the process of planning and selection of the water supply solution for the city of Split in the second half of the 19th century as well as the implementation of the adopted solution which was put into operation in 1880. It was established that classical sustainability criteria were taken into account in the evaluation of options. The application of a historical-cultural criterion, which was crucial for the selection of a solution, represents the particularity. The selected concept of the water supply system was entirely based on the water supply system of the Emperor Diocletian’s Palace which was built in 305 AD. Thus, the well-known sustainability of Roman water supply systems was confirmed as well as the sustainability of the 1880 system whose parts are still in use today. The study gave a clearer insight into the design concept and operational characteristics of the Diocletian’s (Roman) water supply system as well as into the process of solving the problem of water supply at the end of the 19th century.
