Sažetak
Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) stands for a pain disorder without a visible lesion of oral mucosa. Etiology, despite the large number of proposed factors, still remain an enigma. The aim of this study was to standardize the oral mucosal sensitivity patterns to electrical current stimulationof healthy population and to compare results with those obtained from BMS patients. A total of 38 BMS patients (the experimental group) AND 31 asymptomatic subjects (the control group) were investigated. Iontophoretic apparatus was used as a source of different current. A sensory threshold was measured in 15 oral regions. Current intensity required to elict a sensation varied from 0, 1 to 8, 5 mA. Obtained results were compared between groups using the T-test. Sensory thresholds were lower for all tested regions in the BMS group, and statistical significance was found in 9 out of 15 regions. The hyperreactivity found in the BMS group indicates the presence of somatosensory dysfunction in BMS and points out the possible role of neuropathological origin of BMS
