George Huz from Rascinia, 16th century, Croatian-Hungarian wars against Ottoman Turks, voyage around Orient, Egypt, Arabian Peninsula.
Sažetak
George Huz was a Croatian soldier, scholar and traveller which was born in the small village Rascinia near Koprivnica in Croatia at the beginning of the 16th century. During the Croatian-Hungarian wars against the Ottoman Turks he was captured near Köszeg in Hungary in 1532 and soon after he became slave for four years. After he was freed from slavery by Suleiman the Magnificent (around 1536/1537) he served in the company of one Ottoman captain in Greece, Egypt, Levant, and Arabia. In 1540 he successfully returned to Rome and Italy where he lived until the early months of 1541, and soon after he travelled back to Croatia. He was one of the first Croatian voyagers which travelled around the Orient during the 16th century. He was well educated in Latin tradition in Pécs. During his stay in Rome he wrote two manuscripts about his life under Ottoman Turks in Latin language (in Vatican library and archive in Vienna). He died sometime after 1566 in Bratislava. Georgi Huz voyage is mostly unknown to the international public and historians. His texts contain many interesting notes about the life under the Ottoman rule, the historical observations of that time, and description of the monuments and the places he visited. During his presentation author, will give the most important details of George Huz life, and the description of his voyage around the Orient especially about his life in Egypt (in two occasions), and in the Arabian Peninsula.
