Sažetak
Six fragments of the stone frieze from the church in Mutvoran (now in the Archaeological Museum in Pula) represent an interesting and unique example of the early Romanesque facade sculpture with narrative yet very symbolical content. This ensamble, depicting various animals, differs significantly from the usual bestiary iconography of the sculptural decoration in the area. The text will try to discuss and interprete the slabs (frieze) within local early Romanseque corpus as well as the broader context (giving analogies with the sculpture in Lombardy and France in the same period) with the special reference to the text (Isaiah 11) and the meaning and message of this programmatic decoration on the church facade within the Gregorian reforms of the late 11th century. The article will tackle the ways of representation and perception of these images, the begining of the programatic decorative programs on the church facades and portals used for allegorical exegesis and upon the role of local priests in the commission of the sculptural decoration.
