Sažetak
A changing territorial contact area of major European imperial forces marks early modern period in Croatian history: Habsburg Monarchy, Ottoman Empire and Venetian Republic. For a few centuries this was an area of constant military (as well as paramilitary) operations, territorial expansion and regression of bordering forces. Beside the direct destruction of the environment and landscape elements, the insecurity in the borderlands also led to migratory flows and change of the population. All of these created a kind of degraded and deserted area of the borderlands. The research is based on historical sources from 18th and 19th centuries of different kind: natural-historical travel accounts, historical programmatic maps of the Croatian (historical) lands in the occasion of the border demarcation in the 18th century, as well as cadastral survey graphic and textual documentation. Since the sources are different in nature they complement each other very well. Although the cadastral documentation is very accurate, the cartography of the 18th century, as well travel accounts and narratives, require contextual (and comparative) interpretation. The research has shown the overall image of the borderlands as vast deserted area – terra deserta, and bare karst desert, which is only populated by a new population group, adapted to this kind of the environment and insecurity of the borderlands through the mobile pastoralism.
