Sažetak
This paper deals with an interesting new experiment of the Canadian author Diane Schoemperlen in the form of the short story. Previously in her work Schoemperlen has used illustrations and collages which were in various ways incorporated into her texts but in her new book she went one step further: she used samples of existing texts (usually from the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 20th centuries) and interpolated these texts into her own writing, hence creating 'verbal collages' than complemented with visual collages. According to Schoemperlen, these two media, verbal and visual collages, stand in relations of connection- disconnection, resonance-dissonance, and collision-collaboration, and the first aim of this paper will be to shed light on these relations in each short story in the collection. The second aim of this paper will be to position this short fiction within the theory of the short story, in other words, to show why these short texts/illustrations can be approached as short stories, and how they function as short stories.
