Sažetak
Global Value Chains (GVC) have altered international trade and offered enormous opportunities for small and open economies to increase not only the quantity, but also the quality of their exports, to access more advanced technology and to increase their competitiveness. While most studies have acknowledged the role of Multinational Cooperation (MNCs) in generating productivity spillovers, this study investigates their role in determining forward and backward participation of firms in international markets. This article adds to existing macro literature by examining the firm level determinants of joining supply chain trade using the most recent version of a cross-country survey conducted by EBRD. The results show that foreign, larger firms and those in possession of internationally recognized certificates and access to bank credit have a higher probability to engage in two-way trade. These act as a signal to foreign buyers and suppliers that firms can meet quality and reliability requirements. Productivity and use of foreign technology play an important role in supply chain trade, but only for small firms and those in EU News Member States (NMS). Finally, the effects of FDI spillovers and linkages with foreign firms are insignificant, casting doubt on the potential of foreign firms to help the internationalization process.
