Sažetak
The global market has resulted in rapid changes and numerous challenges in management of small and medium hospitality enterprises (SMHE's). In today's business environment, competent management of enterprises is particularly pronounced, knowing that time has passed when enterprises have based their competitiveness on material and financial resources. The last decades of the information age or the age of knowledge, as it is increasingly called, imposes "knowledge" as a key resource for building the enterprise's competitive advantage. How and how to respond to all market challenges today is a chronic problem for business managers. The purpose of this paper is to focus on facilitating the adoption of new knowledge in the area of SMHE's, that are the backbone of economic development of each country and a key generator for creating new jobs. For this purpose, a multidimensional statistical method - factor analysis – was used. Empirical research was attended by 107 SMHE's in the Republic of Croatia. The aim of this paper is to indicate which are the most important factors affecting the competitiveness of SMHEs and their individual importance in business management. After factor analysis of 21 variables, 5 specific most important factors were identified for the competitiveness. The research results showed that strategic networking, adopt to competitors, internal communication, service quality and human resources are the most important for the competitiveness of SMHEs and that their understanding by managers is necessary for business success.
