Sažetak
Prior to the 21st century, information about macroalgal taxa from Croatian freshwaters was scattered in publications dealing with aquatic vegetation of particular areas, with the oldest record dating back to 1867. During the 20th century, a major breakthrough occurred when a large number of papers dealing with the occurrence and abundance of algal flora in Croatian freshwaters was published. Most of the research was referring to the area of the Krka River and the cascade lake system of the Plitvice Lakes, although a checklist mentioning 13 species was published for Croatia. However, a great deal of these papers, including the checklist, was published in the national language and in local journals, many of them still available only in printed forms ; while only a small number is digitized and available online. For these reasons, the majority of information regarding Croatian freshwater macroalgae remained hidden from general checklists and databases. This particular overview is abstracted as a survey of freshwater rhodophytes through historical literature beginning with the 19th century up to the most recent research, performed between 2009 and 2019 on more than 600 locations. As a result, a new checklist was composed containing 18 species divided into 13 genera: Audouinella, Bangia, Batrachospermum, Chroodactylon, Compsopogon, Hildenbrandia, Lemanea, Paralemanea, Pneophyllum, Polysiphonia, Porphyridium, Sirodotia and Thorea. The genus Batrachospermum remained partly described with only historical data, as numerous recently collected specimens are still waiting for the molecular analysis. Bringing additional and most recent insight into the composition and distribution of freshwater rhodophytes in Croatia, this overview expands the frontiers of modern knowledge on these taxa further into SE Europe.
