Sažetak
The Center for Marine Research in Rovinj, Croatia, is part of the Ruđer Bošković Institute (RBI), Croatia leading research institute for natural science. The Center for Marine Research established its culture collection for marine phytoplankton in 2006. The collection was initiated out of necessity for axenic, monoclonal cultures of phytoplankton species for molecular characterization during species descriptions. Following its main application in phytoplankton taxonomy and systematics, in recent years the culture collection supplies its cultures to basic research projects in cell physiology as well as ecotoxicology and biotechnology within the RBI. A new strong focus is the application of the CIM culture collection in metabarcoding applications, where its cultures are used to fill the gaps in reference sequence databases. Up until today a little more than 900 strains (diatoms, dinoflagellates and coccolithophorids) were isolated. The strains are isolated from the northern Adriatic Sea and subsequently characterized morphologically (LM, TEM and SEM) as well as on the base of molecular markers (18S rDNA, ITS1, 5.8S rDNA, ITS2, 28S rDNA, RBCL). The CIM culture collection is strongly focused on diatom strains from the northern Adriatic Sea and sees its role as a gateway to the regional phytoplankton diversity.
