Sažetak
In this paper I explore the relevance of literature for the contemporary democratic society, one in which numerous individuals, different with respect to their origins, religious beliefs, political attitudes, sexual orientation, life-goals and the overall conception of what constitutes a good life, have to live together in peace and tolerance, while also having the options of and capabilities to pursue their own preferences and act on their own desires and volitions. I first explore how engagements with literature foster individuals’ cognitive and moral development, enabling them to make more informed choices, and to act from a perspective of morally sensible human beings. In the second part I emphasize the role and responsibility of educational system in making sure children are exposed to literary works and other forms of art that benefit them. The theoretical framework of the paper is set by thinkers such as J.S. Mill, M. Arnold, I. Kant, M. Nussbaum and H. Small.
