Sažetak
INTRODUCTION As the part of the MATRA Pre- accession Project named “Strenghtening of the Croatian Institute of Occupational Health”, the Croatian Institute of Occupational Health (CIOH) is developing a website and a periodic online newsletter with information on occupational safety and health (OSH). AIM The aim of our research was to identify the education and information needs of occupational health physicians (OP) working in occupational health services (OHS) and to form an insight into quality and quantity of computerization and informatization of Croatian OHS. METHODS The list of topics in OSH with questions about the level of interest in pursuing educational options and about access to a computer with internet connection were given to OPs working in OHS. Answers were received from 68 OPs (45.3%), among them 25 (37%) males, and 43 (63%) females. Almost a half, 31 (46%), was in the group of 55 years of age or more. RESULTS Out of 68 OPs, 65 (95, 6%) have a need for further education, and 66 (97, 1%) have a need both for further education and for getting information via internet. The greatest number of physicians 50 (73.5%) chose occupational risk factors as favorite topic, followed by occupational diseases monitoring 49 (72.1%), Croatian legislation 47 (69.1%) and EU legislation on OSH 40 (58.8%), etc. Short course of 8-16 hours was chosen as the best mode of delivery by 53 (77, 9%) OPs, followed by course with continuing education credits 48 (70.5%) and a package for group selfstudy including teachers instructions 46 (67.6%). Only 48 OPs (71%) have a computer (Pentium III generation) at work and 50 (74%) of them have it at home. CONCLUSION This survey shows that the majority of the occupational health physicians who answered the questionnaire in spite of their age of 55 years still have a great need for education in occupational health and safety as well as for getting information via internet. Based on the aforementioned results it can be concluded that activities of CIOH within the MATRA project (forming of new educational courses and workshops, developing a web-site, etc.) come just in time to answer the needs of our occupational health physicians towards further education and getting more information.
