Sažetak
In Zagreb and in Croatia industrialization was lagging behind compared to Western Europe. A more intense industrial development occurred in the 1860s, following the establishment of the chamber of commerce and crafts and the construction of the railway. Tobacco industry was one of Zagreb's first and most important industries. It employed as many workers as all other industries put together. Zagreb Tobacco Factory operated at two locations. Since its foundation, in 1869, the first factory was placed in an unused general hospital building at the market place (today Croatian Republic Square). The factory operated in that building for the next twelve years. The first factory building was constructed in then suburban area in the late 1850s, following the project made by Viennese architect Ludwig von Zettl. In early 1880s it was proposed to move Zagreb University from its restricted Upper Town framework. The city authorities decided that the most suitable building would be the one which had been rented out for the tobacco factory. For this reason, the factory was relocated in1882, when the building was converted for university purposes. A new tobacco factory was built in nowadays Klaićeva street. The chosen location was situated in what was then the city’s south- eastern periphery, in close proximity to the railway and the only railway station in Zagreb in that period. In the first phase, 1881-1882, the north and the east wing were built based on Rupert Melkus's project and the historicist building got its recognisable L-shaped layout plan. Numerous international examples are also significant in the context of urban regeneration of Zagreb’s former peripheral areas. The first mentioned former tobacco factory building represents the frontal building of the western wing of the Green Horseshoe system of parks - Zagreb`s most significant urbanistic achievement in the second half of the 19th century. The latter building, the best conserved 19th century industrial building in Zagreb, due to economic crises and numerous complex reasons still does not house the Croatian History Museum, which was supposed to be moved from its historical Upper Town baroque palace.
