Sažetak
Following the series of studies with Goldberg's Big-Five markers in Croatia (Mlacic & Knezovic, 1992, 1994 ; Knezovic, Mlacic & Bubas, 1995), we conducted another study relevant for the development of Croatian taxonomy of personality descriptive terms. Goldberg stated (1992) that it is important to distinguish between factor markers and personality scales ; the former are intended as a means of locating other measures within a comprehensive structural representation and the latter are tended as measures of individual differences for decision making in applied contexts. By applying Goldberg's unipolar and bipolar markers in a selection situation and by comparing the resulting factor structures with structures of the same markers in a non-selection situation we tried to establish the utility of Big-Five markers in applied settings. The design of this study was fourfold: I) Unipolar Big-Five markers in a selection situation (N= 170), 2) Bipolar markers in a selection situation (N=159), 3) Unipolar markers in a non-selection situation (N=171), 4) Bipolar markers in non-selection situation (N= 171). The subjects used Big-Five markers for self-descriptions. The results showed that: I) the selection situation resulted in two evaluative factors (positive and negative evaluation) that overwhelmed descriptive Big-Five factors. The same effect was present both in unipolar and bipolar format. 2) the unipolar format has been shown to be less robust than the bipolar format. The factor structure of unipolar markers in a non-selection situation was identical with the factor structure in a selection situation - two evaluative factors overwhelmed descriptive Big-Five factors. Bipolar markers in a nonselection situation resulted in five factors that resembled the intended Big-Five factors.
