Sažetak
The paper describes the development of a comprehensive taxonomy of Croatian personality descriptive terms, organized in three studies. In the first study three judges (psychologists) searched through a standard dictionary of Croatian language (60 000 entries) for person-descriptive terms and extracted 10 657 terms, including 3512 adjectives, 4192 attribute-nouns and 2953 type-nouns. To examine the comprehensiveness of the list extracted from the dictionary, the initial pool was checked against few additional sources, and the final (“master”) list from the first study consisted of 11 118 terms, including 3881 adjectives, 4245 attribute-nouns and 2992 type-nouns. In the second study, the 3881 adjectives were categorized by seven judges (psychologists) into 13 different types of descriptors, based on the classification system developed by Angleitner, Ostendorf and John (1990). In the third study, the 483 adjectives that the majority of judges classified as dispositions were rated for self-descriptions by 519 University of Zagreb students and for peer-descriptions by 515 students’ best acquaintances. The measures of imported Big-Five dimensions were: 1. 50-BRS (Goldberg, 1992) and 2. IPIP100 (Goldberg, 1999a) The adequate factor structure for all the six lexical data sets was five factor orthogonal structure. Croatian emic lexical factors were interpreted as: Emotional Instability, Extraversion, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness and Intellect. The inspection of factor content of Croatian emic factors and their relation to imported Big-Five measures revealed one-to-one correspondence for three Croatian factors: Extraversion, Conscientiousness and Intellect, while the relation of Croatian and imported factors of Emotional Instability and Agreeableness was complex.
