Sažetak
Linear economy for both food and plastics presently prevails to the detriment of the environment, resources, ecosystems and public health. The paper analyses the nexus between food packaging and food and proposes possible pathways to achieving circular economy, particularly the use of bio-based materials that are also biodegradable. Sustainability of such materials when used for food packaging is discussed. Reference is made in particular to the situation in Croatia which is confronted with plastic waste management problem and is still not taking a proactive approach in reducing the packaging, finding innovative solutions for bio-based compostable packaging for marketing locally produced food, and regulating the packaging, particularly through the use of green public procurement instrument.
