Sažetak
The establishment of a ‘Caliphate’ in territories of Iraq and Syria, announced by the self-proclaimed Caliph and leader of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) Abu Bakr al- Baghdadi in June 2014, and his appeal to all Muslims to migrate from lands of infidels to holy Muslim lands, has been highly recognized among Muslims in the Western Balkans as a mandatory religious duty for all ‘true believers’. In the following period, a new wave of Muslim men, and especially women from the Balkans, motivated by a mixture of religious and other factors, left their homes and moved to the ISIS-ruled ‘Caliphate’, where the Balkan Muslim contingent, since the beginning of the civil war in Syria, supported the opposition groups’ fight against the Assad regime.
