Sažetak
The article examines the ordering function of the con-cept of origin in a specific constellation: the post-im-perial novel. Using the example of the literature of the so-called Habsburg myth, it asks what role theorigin plays for authors whose geopolitical space of origin has disappeared at the time of their writing.What are the significant similarities and differencesbetween the literary texts and biographical historiesof post-imperial authors? And how do they correlatewith the imperial as a comprehensive as well as a dif-ferentiated space of origin?To answer these questions, Joseph Roth andRobert Musil are considered from the theoretical per- spective of the literary field. As a first step, the con-cept of origin is clarified in terms of literary studies.The second and third step turn to the literary textsand examine the ways in which the image of imperialorigin is generated in Roth’s Radetzkymarsch and Musil’s Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften (The Man Without Qualities). Thefourth and final step moves from the narratives to theauthors by examining their disposition in search of ahomology between the post-imperial novel and thegeopolitical context of its origin.
