Sažetak
Energy consumption enhancement and reduced energy sources enforce the requirement of technology investigation for utilization of alternative energy solutions, particularly biogas, as sustainable energy sources. Energy produced by the biogas, which is considered as neutral fuel regarding carbon dioxide (CO2), decreases the quantity of fossil fuel which is necessary for the production of the equivalent energy. At the same time, CO2 emission which is the combustion product is decreased. Again, organic waste due to specific characteristics and continuing intake from industry and agriculture production perform potential adversity for health and environmental protection. Reducing of disposal organic waste causes decreasing of methane (CH4) emission, which is a result of anaerobic biodegradation of organic waste and biomass. Taking into account that increases in greenhouse gas emissions trend in Croatia in the last fifteen years amounts to nearly 3 % per year, utilization of alternative renewable energy sources, which include sustainable management and treatment of organic waste, has particular importance. Enabling environment, which stimulates utilization of biogas as renewable energy source, represent significant contribution for greenhouse gases mitigation as well as achievement of national objectives concerning the Kyoto Protocol. The Energy Development Strategy of the Republic of Croatia (OG 130/09) aim for the share of 20 % of renewable energy sources in final energy consumption in 2020 was set based on the EU legislative package on climate and energy, particularly in Directive on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources (2009/28/EC). Climate change policy should be one of the key factors in the achievement of sustainable development in Croatia with the economy development as support in climate change mitigation.
