Sažetak
A numerical methodology based on Abaqus/Explicit has been applied in the assessment of ballistic protection of Al2024-T3 plates. The methodology has been validated using experimental results from the literature. Three types of impactor models have been employed. The first type is the spherical impactor, used in the validation of the methodology. The geometry of the remaining two impactor types has been defined based on the realistic high-velocity impactors. The effects of plate thickness, radius of curvature and incidence angle on the ballistic protection have been analyzed. Furthermore, the initial velocity of the impactor has been varied to predict the ballistic curves. The results demonstrate that numerical methods can be efficiently employed in the design of new aircraft structures with improved ballistic protection.
