Sažetak
Arsenic is naturally occurring chemical element widely found in nature. Inorganic forms of arsenic are generally considered to have highly toxic effect on human health and environment. The greatest concerns for public health from arsenic compounds originate from contaminated groundwater or soil which contain inorganic forms of arsenic, mainly as arsenite (III) and arsenate (V). According to the recent epidemiological studies, an association between arsenic exposure and cancer, hypertension or kidney disease has been demonstrated. The aim of this study is electrochemical detection of As3+ ions using modified and unmodified glassy carbon electrode in model systems, as well as in groundwater samples. Electrochemical analysis has been carried out by means of cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. Based on the obtained results, the most adequate method was determined. The measurements were performed in a Faraday cage using potentiostat/galvanostat (PalmSens) controlled by PSTrace 1.2. software package. The three electrode system consisted of a glassy carbon working electrode, Ag/AgCl reference electrode and a platinum wire counter electrode. Regeneration of the working electrode surface was carried out by polishing with α-Al2O3 suspension, and after that was cleaned in an ultrasonic bath when necessary. Furthermore, the electrochemical system was purged with purified argon in order to deaerate the system, more precisely, to avoid oxygen contamination during measurements. It has been found that unmodified glassy carbon electrode did not show any electrochemical response on arsenic in the potential range from -1 V to +1 V by cyclic voltammetry nor by differential pulse voltammetry. Therefore, glassy carbon electrode surface has been modifed, according to he procedure found in literature, in order to detect As3+ ions in standard solutions and grounwater samples. Differential pulse voltammetry was found to be more sensitive method for As3+ detection, compared to cyclic voltammetry, which was especially evident in the groundwater samples analysis where pronounced oxidation peaks in measured potential range were obtained.
