Sažetak
The policy of intensive development of institutional and socially organized care and education of children and youth, as well as the lifelong education of adults, is adopted in the Republic of Croatia. One of the last documents that confirms previous statement is the Strategy of Education, Science and Technology, which in its measures foresees the provision of optimal working conditions in educational institutions and points out that “important prerequisites for quality education are availability, networking and equipping of educational institutions”. So far, regardless of the work invested into the issue of pedagogical standards, curricula and laws and strategies on education, very little, or more accurately, almost nothing was done regarding the increase of the quality of furniture and equipment and the modernisation of the process to furnish educational institutions to follow the above-mentioned structural and pedagogical changes in education. Due to the provisions of the Public Procurement Act and the selection of financially most favourable supplier, the economy comes before ergonomics, functionality and quality which promote healthy growth and development of pupils. The consequences can be seen in low quality and non-functionality of furniture and equipment which do not support the part of the use of functional (standard recommended) furniture size, healthy and adequate materials, safe and stable construction, stimulating and creative form, etc. Users (pupils and teachers) have expressed their dissatisfaction with a non-stimulating environment, frequent injuries among children and youth and numerous other negative symptoms. Scientific researches as well as the experience from practice in Croatia show that there are significant inconsistencies in furnishing educational facilities, that the products are often not designed in line with contemporary pedagogical methods and needs of users. The use of wood as an ecological and healthy raw material is decreasing. All the elements that today create educational facilities as the institutions, starting with the implementation of new modes of adoption and implementation of knowledge, as well as the inter-curricular links of contents on the horizontal and vertical level, must necessarily follow the design of the educational environment. The design of furniture and equipment must not obstruct or impede the implementation of the educational curricula, on the contrary, must enable a simpler and easier implementation, encourage creation and creativity, provide a stimulating atmosphere for work, play and learning, the functional, health, environmental, aesthetic, structural and all other design methods to monitor and respond to the needs of children and young people and society as a whole. New facilities, new technologies and techniques in all aspects of the educational system necessarily require transformation. As a socially responsible beings we must encourage, adopt and implement new content for the benefit of (the) younger, and society as a whole. The main goal is a healthy psychological and physical, cognitive, social and other development of children, which is a prerequisite for preserving the health of each individual and the realization of a healthy society at the end.
