Sažetak
Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galoprovincialis) is one of the most common bivalve mollusks in Montenegro and Croatia, both naturally present and produced in aquaculture. Mussels are filter feeding organisms which accumulate fish as well as human pathogens if they are present in the surrounding aquatic environment. One of the most abundant bacteria in marine environment is genus Vibrio comprising of more than 63 species. Most of them are opportunistic pathogens, while some species cause Vibriosis, which is one of the most prevalent bacterial fish diseases in the Adriatic region. Many Vibrio spp. are recognized as human pathogens and have been implicated in seafood-related outbreaks of gastrointestinal infections. This study has been conducted during two seasons (spring and autumn), at two aquaculture farms in the Eastern Adriatic Sea (Montenegro and Croatia) where mussels and European sea bass are farmed at the same location. The main goal was to determine the presence of species of genus Vibrio in soft tissue and intervalval liquid of cultured mussels in order to assess their level of accumulation. High accumulation of fish pathogen strains could be an early indicator of possible disease outbreak. For this purpose, soft tissue and intervalval liquid of the mussels were extracted aseptically, weighed and homogenized. For Vibrio isolation Thiosulfate Citrate Bile Sucrose (TCBS) plates were used, whereas MALDI TOF MS was used for identification of isolated strains. In order to determine the microbial quality of marine water, total coliforms, Escherichia coli and enterococci were enumerated by using Quanti tray 2000 and by applying appropriate tests (IDEXX). Results revealed relationship between microbial water quality at fish farms and bacterial abundance in the mussels. The presence of different Vibrio species showed high diversity, which could be linked to environmental variability in accordance to the microbial water quality.
