Sažetak
The aim of this paper is to compare the results on carbon dioxid emission (CO2) emitted in maritime traffic obtained from International Maritime Organisation (IMO) studies: The Second IMO Greenhouse Gases (GHG) Study 2009 and The Third IMO GHG Study 2014. The Second IMO Greenhouse Gases (GHG) Study 2009 shows that CO2 emission calculated by bottom-up method grew in period between 1990 (approximately 600 million of tons) and 2007 (1050 million of tons). It can be assumed that this growth results from maritime traffic growth and lack of measures for CO2 emissions reduction from ships. The Third IMO GHG Study 2014 shows that CO2 emission calculated by bottom-up method decreased in period between 2008 (approximately 1135 million of tons) and 2012 (less than 1000 million of tons) due to slow steaming (reduction of ships speed). The slow steaming was shipping industry response to higher fuel costs. By comparison of the results for 2007 (the final year of The Second Study and the first year of The Third Study) calculated by bottom-up method, it is obvious that calculated emission in The Third Study (1100 million of tons) is higher than calculated emission in The Second Study (1050 million of tons). It can be assumed that the The Third Study results are more precise than The Second Study results due to the improvements in data collection and interpretation as well as calculation methodologies. The new technologies used for maritime traffic safety improving (Automatic Identification System, AIS) can also be used for collection of all ships data needed for emission calculation. Accordingly, more precise emission calculation can be obtained in new IMO studies.
