Sažetak
The presentation seeks to explore the intersections of culture, memory and identity based on the results of several case studies. The first case study reflects on the trend historical festivals in Hrvatsko zagorje, inspired by the legends of Peasant revolt from 1573. From anthropological perspective, festival re-enactments of the historical events open diverse questions in regards to authenticity, memory and history stirred by the performances, narratives and spatiality. The second example will point out to the problems of lieux de memoire, namely how certain places embody and produce memory. Based on the research on the commemorations dedicated to the memory of the Battle of Vis 1866, this part of presentation will explore the connection between the monuments, the past and the national identity. The last example will question social construction of memory in diverse medial representation of the past. Post socialist reflections on the Yugoslav period of Croatian history enabled the emergence of counter-memory employed by the Croatian political discourse that highlights fear of Yugoslavia, especially the fear of UDBA or communists. In general, all three case studies included in this presentation will try to answer how the memory is made, by whom, how it’s related to the identity and how culture can help us to better understand our relationship with (un)desirable past.
