Sažetak
The investigation of lipogenesis in diabetes and metabolic syndrome in animal models is challenging due to the highly complex regulation of lipogenesis as well as the diversity in the animal species and strains used, and pharmacological or dietary interventions. Today, different rodent models are available that can give us an insight into the changes of the fatty acid profile of different organs during the progression of these diseases. Over recent decades, the relation between sugar intake and metabolic disorders has been intensively investigated in the scientific community and has simultaneously received much attention in public. The brain possesses a unique polyunsaturated fatty acid profile with the highest proportion belonging to two important fatty acids: arachidonic and docosahexaenoic acid. Changes in lipogenesis and fatty acid concentrations in different tissues are a regular consequence of metabolic diseases. The brain is not an exception, although brain tissue is highly resistant to changes in fatty acid composition compared to other organs.
