Sažetak
Due to its favourable topographic position, Vinkovci has always been an area in which cultures replaced one another without interruption. The first farming communities arrived in the territory of eastern Croatia (Slavonia, southern Baranja and western Syrmia) around 6300 BC, and brought with them pottery, domesticated animals and plants, as well as new social relations, ideology and religion. The remains of the Starčevo Culture discovered in Vinkovci were used by S. Dimitrijević when he elaborated his own chronological scheme of northern Croatia.Sopot – the eponymic site of the Sopot Culture, on the right bank of the Bosut, three kilometres to the northwest of the Tržnica tell – is located on an artificial elliptic elevation (three metres high). The systematic archaeological excavation at Sopot, carried out since 1996, has revealed a 37- metre-long part of the settlement. Starting from the south-western end of the settlement, a 10-metre segment of the external part of the ditch has been discovered, 6 m wide and 3 m deep, going in a south-north direction towards the River Bosut.
