Sažetak
"Domestic 20th century approaches to the comparartive study of oral poetry have been characterised by a constantly present turning to the Mediterranean primarily to the Romantic West - and a distancing from the dominant 19th century Balkan epic paradigm. Veering away from the Balkans resulted from the discovery of neglected genre of short narrative poems and ballads, along with drawing attention to a more diversified metric and dialectical repertoire of Croatian oral tradition. However, it is also possible to read off more profound methodological consequences of the Mediterranean-Balkanologival conflict in that paradigmatic shift, this also being formed as a reaction to the implicit confrontation of (Western) European ballads and Balkan ballads among the authors abroad. It happened that the same fact had different readings according to the hermeneutically different inscriptions of present in the past in inside and outside views searching for general features of Croatian oral balladry. And while domestic folklorists noticed the differences in relation to the less distant traditional context of Balkan oral tradition interpreting topics such as genres, the features of particular ballad types, the origins of individual motifs and types, even modes of transmission in transitory terms as a bridge between Mediterranean (being synonym for Western Croatian ballads were opposed to the (Western) European corpus: its poetic features were brought closerto the Eastern ballads, it was secondarily neglected in the search for generative solutions to the ways of transmission of epic poetry. The view of Balkan ballad poetry as the Other can also be identified in foreign interpretations of the modes of transmission of oral poems: improvisations in the Balkans in opposition to the memorization of Western European ballads containing stereotypes oral/written. However, we will argue for the opinion that these oppositions are superseded both in the domestic as well as in the international interpretations which draw their attention to locally embedded features of particular ballads noticing their polivalent features (Mediterranean, Central European, Balkan) which trespass the metaphorical meaning of areal borders.
