Sažetak
The selection and analysis of filter content is one of the most important steps before sampling airborne particulate matter. High values of some elements in filter media can influence a method’s detection limits, accuracy and quality of analytical results. Quartz microfiber filters are usually used in the standard gravimetric measurement method for the determination of the PM10 or PM2.5 mass fraction of suspended particulate matter, although these types of filters have a high content of some elements. This paper presents the results of ED-XRF elemental analysis of 18 different samples of quartz microfiber Whatman QMA filters. The differences in elemental composition between different sheets within one packaging were also tested. The results were compared with those obtained by standard ICP-MS method. Results showed no differences in metal composition between different sheets of quartz microfiber filters. Significant difference between packaging was found for zinc. The ED-XRF method can be used for preliminary qualitative analysis of iron, zinc, nickel, copper, barium and manganese in quartz filter blanks. The obtained values were higher than those with the reference ICP-MS method ; therefore, more accurate quantitative analysis on such low concentration levels requires further improvements in the calibration of the method.
