Sažetak
I presented talk on my 6-year old environmental pollution research, which I have been conducting with my colleagues/collaborators from different disciplines. It examines a legacy of the coal-based industry on a karstic coastal area (North Adriatic Sea, Croatia), which is densely populated as well as a popular touristic destination. The work has employed of series of methods such as PIXE, ICP-MS, GC-MS, XRD, cytotoxic, genotoxic, and phytotoxic tests, and isotopic and radiometric measurements. The results have shown that the local terra rossa soil has been polluted with sulphur, selenium, PAHs, potentially toxic trace elements (Cr, Cu, Zn, and Pb in particular), and radionuclides (Ra-226). The region has been known for coal mines (Raša coal) from the second half of the 18th century till late 1990s. The coal belongs to a class of superhigh-organic-sulphur (SHOS) coals, unique in world terms as it is characterised by exceptionally high values of S (up to 13%, mean value 9-11%).
