Sažetak
Corpora are usually defined as large collections of machine-readable texts that are representative of a particular variety of language, containing thousands or millions of words, designed with a special purpose of both quantitative and qualitative linguistic analyses. In the last two decades they have been increasingly used in foreign language teaching and learning, especially in the domain of ESP, as valuable sources of empirical data. Nowadays, the importance of such empirical data becomes particularly evident in tertiary level Business English classroom, where it is crucial that teaching materials abound in language that is most frequently used in real communicative situations, and that students are presented with examples from the authentic business environment. Examples from specialised business corpora can help students acquire good language competence needed for professional communication, since they provide us with various elements of the language of business, such as the highest-frequency business vocabulary, compounds, multi-word phrases, collocations, standard business metaphors, acronyms, abbreviations, etc. Therefore, the authors of this paper will discuss the role of corpus linguistics in ESP with special regards to Business English, and highlight some of the most important research related to Business English in the area of linguistics, as well as those related to practical application of specialized corpora in the ESP classroom.
