Sažetak
The paper discusses and highlights the main challenges and the most important aspects in the structural design and analysis of large livestock carriers using ULJANIK shipyard Newbuilding 526 as an example. This type of ship structure is characterized with large openings in the superstructure side shell and with the absence of transverse and longitudinal bulkheads in the superstructure part. Due to specific structure topology hull-superstructure interaction is highly expressed and should be taken from the very early design phase. Two main structural problems have been evaluated in detail: (1) longitudinal strength, with the appropriate level of superstructure participation in the hull girder bending ; (2) transverse/racking strength, where the capability of transverse structure has been evaluated. The direct strength calculation has been carried out according to Lloyd Register (LR) SDA Rules for Ro-Ro ships using full ship FE model in preliminary and detail design phases. In-house structural design support system OCTOPUS_LR was developed and used for the rational structural design through all phases of design process
