Sažetak
Ewes milk from Kupres, Privor and Stolac dairy sheep breeds is mainly used for the production of fine cheese varieties. To the best of our knowledge there is no information about the milk production and composition of these pasture-based dairy ewes. Therefore, the aim of this article is to determine the best model to describe lactation curves in different pasture-based dairy ewes in Bosnia and Herzegovina. All pasture-based dairy ewes are kept with their lambs for at least 30 days of lactation. Milk production and milk composition samples (milk fat, protein, lactose and dry matter percentage) were collected during early, mid and late lactation in Kupres (n=267), Privor (n=204) and Stolac (n=226) pramenka dairy ewes. For the statistical analysis, a repeated measures model was used with ewe as a random effect and breed, lactation number and day of lactation, defined as fixed effects. Four lactation models (Wilmink, Cubic, Ali-Shaeffer and Guo-Swalve) were compared. Models were selected based on the lowest error variance component. The Guo-Swalve model was found to be the best for all measured variables. Kupres pramenka dairy ewe was the highest producing dairy ewe breed with 151 kg of milk during 187 days of lactation (0.81 kg/d), compared to Privorska with 99 kg of milk during 163 days of lactation (0.61 kg/d) and Stolac with 112 kg of milk during 190 days of milk (0.59 kg/d). Fat, protein and dry matter percentage increased throughout lactation, while lactose showed small decrease in all mentioned breeds. The prediction of the milk yield and milk composition from the Guo-Swalve model could be used by the national breeding program for the Kupres, Privor and Stolac breed. Higher producing Kupres pramenka dairy ewe showed the shape of the standard lactation curve compared to Privor and Stolac dairy ewe breed which showed the atypical constantly decreasing shape of the lactation curve which is common in low producing dairy ewes. The effects of the day of lactation had great influence on the total milk yield, milk composition and on the shape of the lactation curve.
