Sažetak
Poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae De Geer, 1778), also known as the red mite, is a hematophagous arthropod, which attacks resting laying hens at night. After feeding, they hide in cracks and crevices away from daylight, where they mate and lay eggs. The mite life cycle consists of 5 stages: egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph and adult stages. Under favourable conditions the cycle could be completed within seven days, so populations can grow rapidly - causing anaemia in badly affected poultry flocks, egg production reduction and welfare issues. Young laying hens are the most susceptible. The mites can also affect the health of the laying hens indirectly, as they may serve as vectors of diseases and pathogens, such as salmonellosis, Avian spirochaetosis and Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, while pustules, scabs, hyperpigmentation and feather loss may also be developed. For this reasons, the aim of this research was to investigate the effects of natural dietary poultry red mite repellent RIDofMITE® based on organic essential oils blend in laying hens nutrition on red mite populations, egg production, egg mass and hens mortality rate. The investigation was conducted under production conditions on a farm with 25000 laying hens of line Lohmann brown in their 60th week of production. During the experimental period, a statistically significant (p<0.05) reduction of 71.85% in all red mite stages was recorded ; moreover a reduction of all nymph stage (73.54%) and all females (67.48%) in laying hens facility was recorded (p<0.05). Based on the obtained results it can be concluded that the natural nutritive addition of RIDofMITE® in amount of 500 g/t of complete feed mixture in laying hens nutrition is highly effective as natural repellent of poultry red mite in farms conditions.
