Sažetak
The poultry red mite, D. gallinae has been involved in the transmission of many pathogenic agents, responsible for serious diseases both in animals and humans, as well in decreased egg production and welfare. Nowadays, several methods are available to control these ectoparasites on poultry farms, but just a few of them are scientifically confirmed to be effective. Consequently, this is an increasing problem, which must be taken into account to maintain satisfactory animal health and sustain egg productivity on commercial farms. The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of essential oil blends with major active substances such as thymol, carvacrol, eucalyptol and linalool (patented as RIDofMITE® product) in concentrations of 0.05% in laying hens nutrition to investigate the effects on poultry red mite population reduction, productive results of hens, eggs technological and organoleptic quality, as well as hens welfare and feather pecking reduction. Experiments were conducted under farm production conditions on 25, 000 laying hens at 60 week of age. Experiments lasted 15 days, during which feed with addition of 0.05% of RIDofMITE® and water was provided ad libitum. After 15 days of the experiment significant (p<0.05) reduction of nymph (73.57%) and adult (67.48%) stages were recorded. Also significant (p<0.05) increase in blood Fe concentrations (from 10.88 to 18.71 µmol/l) was noticed. Significant influence of essential oils blend was not recorded (p>0.05) regarding the feed consumption (117.50 and 117.93 g/hen/day), feed conversion ratio (2.72 and 2.42 g egg/ g feed) and egg mass (43.20 and 48.70 g/hen/day) while significant influence (p<0.05) in egg production was recorded (68.91 and 77.06%). Dietary addition of RIDofMITE® show no significant influence (p>0.05) in technological egg quality, while significant influence (p<0.05) in organoleptic egg quality such as overall impression (5.91 and 6.26) was recorded. Supplement of 0.05% of RIDofMITE® decreased damaging pecking in general (to feathers as well as skin/cloaca), reduced severe feather pecking behaviour and improved the quality of the plumage of hens which directly led to improved hens welfare. Based on the positive results it can be concluded that the essential oil blend in form of the patented product RIDofMITE® can be used as dietary supplement with high efficacy in decreasing poultry mite population, increasing egg production and organoleptic quality of the eggs, and a good tool for improving hens welfare.
