It is a great honour and a pleasure to greet and welcome you to the symposium Forensic Psychiatry at the Beginning of the 21st Century, which is being held at the Educational Center of the University Psychiatric Hospital Vrapče in Zagreb, croatia. this symposium is organized in collaboration with the croatian society for Forensic Psychiatry of the croatian Medical association and the croatian Psychiatric association, on the occasion of the opening of our new Department of Forensic Psychiatry building in the university Psychiatric Hospital Vrapče. at this symposium, we have decided to start the conversation on the state of forensic psychiatry at the beginning of the 21st century in europe, its challenges and perspectives. Distinguished forensic psychiatrists from austria, Belgium, Finland, italy, ireland, and croatia will share their opinions with us. it is also our great honour to host at the symposium the President of the World Psychiatric association (WPa, Professor helen herrman) who will, in the introductory speech, talk about psychiatry at the beginning of the 21st century. Professor norman sartorius will moderate the symposium. in the second part of the symposium, we will hold a round-table discussion titled “Social, Legal, and Psychiatric Factors Influencing Forensic Psychiatric Practice in croatia”. We hope that this symposium, as well as the principal reason behind it (opening of the new forensic psychiatry building that will allow for a more dignified care and application of therapeutic and rehabilitation interventions in forensic psychiatry patients population), will be a milestone moment for croatian forensic psychiatry, its clinical, professional, and scientific aspects.
