Sažetak
Soil collected from the Labin city area is contaminated with Raša coal and ash because of several decades of mining, metallurgical activities and coal combustion in a Plomin thermal power plant. Recent publications have shown elevated values of sulfur and several potentially toxic trace elements in that soil. Therefore, to improve the quality of the environment, bioremediation method was used to reduce potential soil toxicity and negative impact on the sensitive karst and marine coastal ecosystem. In this thesis removal of sulfur (in %) was examined. The experiment is based on use of bacterial cultures of Ralstonia sp. which, owing to its metabolism, remove sulfur from the investigated material. Results are showing relatively high removal in two soil samples with sulfur removal of 69, 75 % in the sample Plomin, and removal of 47, 83 % in the sample Štalije while coal sample showed relatively low sulfur removal of 5, 64 %.
