Sažetak
AIM: It has been shown that positioning of medium sized FOV on both dental arches can yield to additional findings in CBCT examinations, thus improving diagnostic procedure. The aim of this study is to investigate how vertical position of medium sized FOV influence patient's thyroid gland, parotid salivary gland and eye lens doses using Monte Carlo simulation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Dental CBCT unit was simulated using MCNP611 code. Zubal phantom of human head was used. Doses of thyroid gland, parotid salivary gland and eye lens were calculated for two different rotation angles (180 degrees and 360 degrees) and for three different positions of medium sized FOV: maxilla, central position and mandible. RESULTS: Depending on the angle of rotation, lowering the position of medium sized FOV from maxilla to central position may increase thyroid gland dose by up to 24.67%, decrease eye lens dose by up to 29.47% with almost no change of parotid salivary gland dose. Lifting the position of medium sized FOV from mandible to central position may decrease thyroid gland dose by up to 40.24%, increase eye lens dose by up to 11.45% and increase the dose of the parotid gland by up to 37.31%. CONCLUSION: Vertical position of medium sized FOV significantly influence thyroid gland, parotid salivary gland and eye lens doses and it should be considered when deciding to change the practice.
