Sažetak
Since its introduction in the 1950s, machine translation (MT) has had a turbulent history with many ups and downs. The latest surge in expectations has been related to the advent of neural machine translation (NMT). NMT systems use large amounts of data to train artificial neural networks to translate human language sentences. Translations produced in this way are reported to be of better quality than with previous, phrase-based statistical models, in particular for morphology-rich languages. As a result, MT is increasingly integrated in professional translation workflows in an attempt to speed up the process and reduce costs. However, despite the undeniable improvements, MT output still contains a considerable number of errors and requires human intervention when translation is done for publication. Such revision of MT output is known in the language industry as post-editing. In this presentation we will reflect on post-editing as a new skill required of translators. We will look at the different levels of post-editing that are possible, depending on task requirements. The concept of “fitness for purpose” will be brought to bear on the professional post-editing process. Some research-based tips for more efficient post-editing will be shared with the participants.
