Sažetak
Production of H2S is important characteristic for the convenient isolation and detection of Salmonella strains. During the year 2016, 4368 overboots and broiler feces, 825 poultry neck skin and 123 fresh poultry meat samples were tested for the presence of Salmonella. For the purpose of the Salmonella detection in the gulls, a total of 438 cloacal swabs of 4 gulls species (Yellow-legged Gull, Black-headed Gull, Caspian Gull and Common Gull) were captured on Zagreb city garbage dump (45.45 N 16.01 E) and examined during three consecutive winter seasons (2015/16, 2016/17, 2017/18). Isolation, detection and serotyping of Salmonella strains were performed according to EN ISO 6579-1:2017 and CEN ISO/TR 6579-3:2014, respectively. A total of 471 Salmonella strains were isolated from poultry and 23 from gull’s samples. The most frequently detected were Infantis and Typhimurium serovars generally known as those H2S-producing. Out of 25 poultry and 9 gulls’ strains that belong to the named serovars, among which 24 Infantis and 1 Typhimurium of poultry and 9 Typhimurium of gull’s origin did not produce H2S. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was conducted by broth microdilution method with commercial plates according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (2013). For 18 Salmonella Typhimurium strains of gull’s origin, MIC was determined for 14 antimicrobials. All strains were susceptible to TMP, CIP, MERO, NAL, FOT, CHL, TGC, TAZ, COL and GEN, with the MIC value lower or equal to lowest antimicrobial concentration. Regarding to resistance on SMX, TET and AMP, tested isolates were divided into two groups: a) 14 isolates (9 non-H2S and 5 producing H2S) (77, 8 %) all susceptible to named antimicrobials and b) 4 (22, 2 %) H2S producing isolates all resistant to SMX, TET and AMP. Resistance phenotype of Salmonella Typhimurium isolates from gulls in comparison with results of antimicrobial resistance of S. Typhimurium from broilers and laying hens is similar considering to multidrug resistance pattern to SMX, TET and AMP. While there was no antimicrobial resistance to CHL, NAL and CIP in S. Typhimurium strains from gulls, in broilers and laying hens these remained very high. No correlation between production of H2S and AMR in the tested strains was found. According to our knowledge, this is the first case of non-H2S Salmonella spp. (belonging to serovars generally known to produce H2S) isolation from poultry beyond Asia and first ever from wild birds, as well as first antimicrobial susceptibility testing of non-H2S Salmonella strains from wild birds.
