Sažetak
Objective: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a very common clinical entity. Everyday experience teaches us that septal deformities are very frequent in patients suffering from CRS. The question is whether or not some types of septal deformities are involved more frequently in this process. Methods: We observed the incidence of the particular types of septal deformities in the CRS patients in General Hospital Zadar, Croatia, using Mladina classification. The EPOS criteria were used as to define the CRS diagnosis: anamnestical data, clinical finding (anterior rhinoscopy before and after the decongestion, fiberendoscopy) and MSCT scans in coronal and axial projections. The same has been done with the control group of healthy volunteers except for MSCT scans. Previously operated patients have not been involved in the study. Statistical analysis of collected data was made with Chi - square test. Results: The incidence of type 7 nasal septal deformity was found to be statistically significantly higher in the group of CRS patients than in the control group. Type seven of nasal septal deformities has been found very frequently, in near 30% of all CRS cases. This type of nasal septal deformities in our research showed to be mostly composed of the types 3 and 5 nasal septal deformities. Type 3 can be accurately recognized on the axial MSCT scans, while type 5 can be accurately recognized on the coronal ones. Conclusion: Concomitant septal surgery at the time of endoscopic sinus surgery is recommended in patients with CRS.
