Sažetak
Aim: Malondialdehyde (MDA) is marker of oxidative stress and one of the many reactive electrophiles that can cause toxic stress that leads to changes of human cells. Thereby MDA can act as a cofactor in the formation of many oral diseases. Little data exist for salivary oxidative stress markers in the healthy population. The aim of the study was to evaluate of the variability of salivary MDA in healthy individuals during 3 consecutive days, and to observe the influence of the time of day on the levels of salivary MDA. Method: Whole unstimulated saliva samples were collected from 15 healthy adults twice daily on three consecutive days Markers were measured using spectrophotometric method. Results: No significant differences for MDA levels were observed between men and women (p>0.05). Mean MDA values ranged from 313.92 pmol/mL in the morning to 527.95 pmol/mL in the afternoon. Repeated measures ANOVA did not show the significant influence of sampling day as a factor affecting the MDA variability (p>0.05). Time of a day as a factor affecting variability was found to be statistically significant (F=6.486, p=0.024). MDA showed high inter- individual variability of 71.9%. The between- day repeatability was found to be 0.691 for morning and 0.796 for afternoon MDA. Conclusion: Wide variations were observed for salivary MDA concentrations in healthy adult subjects which is in accordance with current research. While controlling for time of a day, salivary MDA can be measured reliably over time since the between-day repeatability of measurements was acceptable.
