Sažetak
Tumor-associated macrophages (TAM) have several functions related to tumor biology including growth and proliferative rate, stroma formation and dissolution, neovascularisation. Monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) is a chemokine which induces chemotactic migration of leukocytes, particularly monocytes. The aim of our study was to define the TAM density in 81 invasive breast carcinomas and to correlate TAM density values with lymph node status, tumor grade and size, mitotic activity index (MAI) and microvesel count. MCP-1 expression was considered in order to explore its role in regulating macrophages infiltration. Widespread macrophage infiltrates were significantly more frequent in tumors ranging from 1 to 2 cm if compared to those smaller than 1 cm of bigger than 2 cm (p=0,023). Furthermore, statistical analysis showed a positive association between macrophages density and MAI (p=0,042). No correlation between macrophages density and lymph node involvement, tumor grade, microvessels count was found. Furthermore, TAM levels and MCP-1 expression were not correlated. According to our results on invasive breast cancer, MCP-1, a tumor derived chemotactic factor, is not involved in regulation of monocyte extravasation although these cells, being correlated to MAI, play a role in tumor growth.
