Sažetak
Background: The metabolic adaptation of cows during the periparturient period to negative energy balance may result in an increased production of reactive oxygen species and acute phase response (APR). Supplementing dairy cows with novel feed additives, such as zeolite clinoptilolite (CPL), could improve their health and production efficacy. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate serum paraoxonase-1 (PON1) activity and haptoglobin (Hp) concentration as indicators of oxidative stress and APR in periparturient cows supplemented with zeolite CPL. Methods: Twenty Holstein-Frisian dairy cows were assigned into two groups, control (n=10) and CPL group (n=10 ; 100 g zeolite CPL (Vibrosorb, Viridisfarm, Podpićan, Croatia) in the ratio on daily basis). Blood samples were taken on days -180, -90, -60, -30, -10, 0, 5, 12, 19, 26, 33, 40 and 60 relative to parturition. The PON1 activity was measured spectrometrically by the method of hydrolysis of paraoxon and Hp concentration spectrometrically by the Tridelta PhaseTM Haptoglobin Assay. Results: PON1 activity was decreased postpartum in control group on days 0, 5, 12 and 19 compared to -90 and -60, while in CPL group was decreased only closely around partus on days -10, 0 and 5 compared to days -180. Haptoglobin concentration was increased after partus in both groups. Moreover, in CPL group the concentrations were lower than in control even not statistically significant. Conclusion: Dairy cows undergo oxidative stress and acute phase response around calving. Supplementing dairy cows with zeolite CPL might reduce oxidative stress and APR during the transition period.
