Sažetak
Stroke is one of the leading causes of mortality in the world and in Croatia. It is the leading cause of permanent physical, psychological or social disability because of motor paralysis, muscle spasticity, cognitive disorders, speech and hearing impairment, emotional functioning disorders and social exclusion. Modern society is old and stroke affects the older population. It is important that the recovery after stroke is made more efficient. Available scientific databases have been searched on the effects of physical activity on the recovery of older people's functioning after a stroke. Physical activity is one of the most important methods that can influence the recovery of physical and psycho-social function of stroke survivors. Different methods and forms of physical activity are employed in rehabilitation after stroke: strength exercises, endurance training, balance exercises, and specific individual functional tasks. Physical activity can be guided by a neuro-physiotherapist or performed individually by stroke survivors, as a previously learned activity. Individual exercises are the most common, but group training as well as individual exercises performed in different conditions have also been proved effective. There is still no standardized physical activity and no evidence of all possible positive effects of it on recovery after stroke.
