Sažetak
The last financial crisis made clear that European banking system needs improvements. The most comprehensive result of the work that has been conducted in order to create a more transparent and safer, both structural and regulatory framework is the European Banking Union. European Banking union ensures better supervision of banks in crisis and presents a step towards fully integrated Economic and Monetary Union. The Banking union applies to countries in the euro area while the non-euro area countries can also join. It is based on the so-called Single rulebook which includes stronger prudential requirements for banks, improved protection for depositors and rules for managing failing banks in Member states. The paper analyses the purpose, structure and regulatory framework of the European Banking union and identifies what measures are still needed to complete it.
