Sažetak
Heavy metal contamination of water and soils is one of the major environmental problems and represent significant risks to human health as well as to the ecosystems. Since adsorption is a major process responsible for accumulation of heavy metal in soil, the study of adsorption processes is one of importance factor for the understanding of ability of soils to adsorb different metal ions. The most used adsorbents in wastewater treatment throughout the world were natural clays, minerals, and activated carbons prepared from different natural materials. The most important parameters controlling heavy metal adsorption and their distribution between soil and water are soil type, metal concentration, soil pH and contact time. The aim of this work is study the possibility of orange peel charcoal as adsorbent for copper removal from soil collected from wetland area of Karlovac through laboratory experiments. The soil samples were dried to constant mass at 85°C, homogenized, and stored for measurement of physicochemical properties such as pH, organic carbon, and CaCO3 using standard analytical methods. Orange peel charcoal (OPC) was prepared from well dried sample which was carried out in a muffle furnace by placing a sample in a silica crucible at 300°C for one hour. Adsorption studies were carried out by batch process. Different amounts of soil samples (0.5 to 1.0 g) and OPC were added to glass flasks containing of 100 mL copper solution (prepared from CuCl2 x 2 H2O) of the desired concentration (0.5 to 3 mg/mL). The mixture was stirred for 90 minutes at different temperatures (7°C, 25°C and 35°C). After adsorption, the mixtures were filtered and the copper ion concentrations in the filtrate were determined by using an UV-VIS Spectrophotometer (Shimadzu Model UV-2600). Moreover, kinetics batch tests were carried out at room temperature and samples were taking every 15 minutes. The adsorption process is explained by the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms models, and some thermodynamic parameters such as ΔG, ΔH and ΔS values are obtained. The adsorption kinetic is rapid and the equilibrium is attained after about 30 minute of experiment, moreover the adsorption capacity increased with increasing temperature. Moreover, obtained results confirmed that orange peel charcoal can be used as cheap and effective adsorbents for copper removal from soil. This research work will help us to design an economical technique for water and soil purification, contaminated by high copper concentration
