Sažetak
Armed conflict produces numerous negative but also unexpected effects on archaeological heritage, namely sites and landscapes. Even decades after an armed conflict in Croatia, new problems seem to emerge. Demarcation zones between conflicting sides stretch over vast areas, crosscutting numerous archaeological sites and cultural landscapes. Such zones are polluted with a host of unexploded devices and landmines. Humanitarian demining falls within the purview of proper services and policies whose job it is to address such problems. However, when mine suspected areas are coupled with archaeological heritage it seems only natural that such instances should also fall within the purview of heritage protection services. The purpose of this discussion is to address various aspects of post-conflict management and the role of archaeological heritage protection services and archaeological community in constituting guidelines, practices, outreach strategies, damage assessment models and protocols in cases when purviews of different services intersect with heritage protection. Problems regarding long-lasting collateral damage on archaeological sites after an armed conflict will be illustrated by case study of Zadar hinterland area. The Zadar hinterland karst ridges contain numerous prominent positions and many of these positions feature archaeological sites which are emblematic for the region – the gradina. This monumental architecture dating from the Bronze and Iron Ages were often reused as military positions or demarcation zones in the armed conflict and as such are often marked as mine suspected areas and as such become the subject of demining activities.
