Sažetak
Epilepsy is a chronic brain activity malfunction characterised by recurrent seizures caused by excessive neuronal activity of brain cells. Clinical presentation may be various, as well as etiology and laboratory exam results. Epilepsy is closely related to younger age ; the prevalence rates from 8-18 years is 6, 4/1000. if and adolescents are presented together in comparison with aadults the prevalence rate is: age 0-18 years 4, 9/1000 and after 18 years 4, 8/10000. Nevertheless, 20-30 percent of seizures that are non- epileptic are regarded as epileptic and treated for years. In order to prevent misdiagnosis, a thorough diagnostic process has to be performed. The key in differing epileptic from non- epileptic seizures in found in anamnesis or hetroanamnesis, that is, in detailed description of the event and video record, if available. Considering the impact of seizures and the antiepileptic medications on the quality of life, a careful examination needs to be conducted, in order to confirm the diagnosis, determine the etiology and the risk of recurrence, and to provide the optimal treatment and medical care. Antiepileptic therapy efficiently controls seizures in two thirds of patients. When selecting an optimal anticonvulsant the age of the patient, seizure type, comorbidity, side effects and the price of the medication should all be considered. With best possible treatment seizures are brought under control, side effects are avoided and a good quality of live is provided. Prognosis of epilepsy is good in patients whose seizures are well controlled by medicines and children start leading lives equally as their healthy peers.
