Sažetak
The purpose of this research is to determine whether there is any relation between sport activity and smoking habits among school children. We wanted to determine whether school children that are sports active smoke. The research indicates that 39% male and 41% 15-year-old female pupils have attempted to smoke. The percentage is slightly lower as compared to the Debeljak and Kalan (1987) research, which included 14-year-old pupils. In the 1987 research, a little over 30% pupils attempted to smoke. 14, 6% male and 11, 2% female pupils smoke (Graph 1). On average, male pupils have started smoking at the age of 12, 9, whereas female pupils have started smoking at the age of 13, 3. In 1987, 9% male and 14% female pupils smoked. Nowadays, there are numerous established methods for giving up smoking, such as, acupuncture, nicotine bandages and chewing gums, hypnosis etc. Deprecation, prevention, and prohibition of smoking among young people are undoubtedly means that can help reduce the smoking habits. Even though results gathered in this research could not prove efficiency of any other means in this respect, we though hypothesize that young people will be turned away from smoking by means of planning a qualitative way of life. People who are adequately occupied most likely fulfill their needs by taking part in appropriate activities and this way they do not feel the need for any kind of substitutes. We think that the most important factor influencing the decrease of smoking habits is providing appropriate and adequate activities for young people in their spare time. It is the spare time that should be properly conducted and planned. Spare time should be fulfilled with activities that would fully engage each young individual.
